Our weekend was jam-packed with summer goodness, and the weather was divine.
Saturday we went up to visit Nicole at the Providence Arts Festival. She was there with her awesome new collection.
That evening, we sat around a campfire with friends and ate s'mores with JUMBO marshmallows.
Sunday, we indulged in another delicious breakfast at The Barn and made a quick trip to the only beach that still allows dogs in the summer.
We also stopped to get some heirloom tomato seedlings at Young Family Farm, since my heirloom seeds that I started two months ago haven't been doing so well. I'm so excited to (hopefully) eat some crazy and delicious tomatoes. We got a variety pack with green zebra, red zebra, roman candle, brandywine, Cherokee purple, and green sausage species.
We went for a bike ride on the East Bay bikepath, and stopped to take in the view at the Audubon Wildlife Refuge in Bristol.
I think it's going to be a fantastic summer.
Once I got this issue of Martha Stewart Living in the mail, I knew it was ON. I am so excited to finally have a garden of my own, and have been spending multiple hours every weekend reading gardening books and magazines, daydreaming about our yard's transformation.
We plan to put in a rainbarrel and one to two raised beds. I am thinking of having one raised bed for vegetables and one for flowers. Our yard is decently-sized but mostly shady - I'm not even sure if we have enough light to grow these things.
*this is just a small portion of our yard, there is lots more room behind the garage!
I am also looking forward to planting those cool heirloom seed varieties we picked up on our honeymoon. I need to remember to start small though, and to keep things simple at first - I am a disaster with houseplants and I have a lot of learning to do.
This guy. This guy right here. He's always surprising me.
Like how yesterday, he turned out to NOT have to work afterall, and I came home to these beautiful flowers in a vintage tin from our wedding florist.
Because I thought he was working, I had made plans (that I was very much looking forward to) to hang out with two girlfriends and indulge in a decadent chocolatefest. So, we all partook. Leftover chocolate Guinness Cake, chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate molten lava cakes, chocolate crinkle cookies . . . it was ridiculous. I had purchased cherry-flavored alcoholic whipped cream as a surprise ingredient to top the molten lava cakes with, but I mistakenly put the can in the fridge and ruined it. Cue sad trombone sound effect.
I hope you also had a happy Monday.
This weekend Jeff and I visited the Natural History Museum at Rogers Williams Park so I could check out this exhibit. The exhibit was quite small, but luckily there were lots of other things to see at the museum including a planetarium show and (my favorite) a room fashioned after a Victorian-era specimen collection study. I had never been to this museum before and was excited to learn they give out "vault tours" once a year. Did you know that most museums display only about 2% of their entire collection? The rest is locked safely away in climate-controlled vaults.
We also went for a blustery but beautiful walk with the dog at Mount Hope Farm.
Sunday night, we hosted a "Beer - It's What's for Dinner" party. We made beer bread, cheddar beer soup, and Guinness Cake for dessert. It all came out quite tasty! The Guinness cake surprised me a bit. I thought it would be a rich, sweet chocolate cake, and that the frosting would be super-sweet and thick like that cream cheese frosting you find on carrot cakes. Instead the cake was dense with a slightly mellower flavor, like chocolate pudding. The cream cheese frosting was tempered by the addition of fresh whipped cream. It was so good, I even had it for breakfast :)
It was a good weekend.
Friday night was spent at one of my favorite restaurants in the company of friends. Afterwards, we watched an awesome local cover band, Felix Brown play at the Newport Blues Cafe.
Saturday, Jeff and I ventured to an outlet for dog products, where we bought Falkor this (discounted) lifejacket - for our summer yachting adventures. (Well, there will be at least one canoe trip).
After the outlet, we stopped at Gregg's Restaurant for dessert and pickles. Really, it's not as gross as it sounds- the pickles are light and fresh, the perfect palate cleansers. We sat near a giant, lighted, rotating display of HUGEASS cupcakes, and the whole time we were there waitresses were bringing out trays and trays of decadent cakes to restock the bakery display case. NOTE: there were two additional people involved in this meal.
Sunday, the girls made Valentines while the boys watched the Superbowl game, I made this awesome sweet potato sesame and miso dip and Mexican chocolate brownies - they both turned out great!

I hope your weekend was great too!
Well, after all of my bitching and moaning about being stir crazy, I actually had a fantastic weekend. It was exactly what I needed. I could also be so happy because I had two of my top five best breakfasts ever (though maybe it's just been too long since I've gone out for breakfast).
Saturday, I went back to the Beehive Cafe in Bristol, and got eggs over easy with sweet potato hash (sweet potatoes, carmelized onions, and gouda cheese). Then I went snowshoeing in the gorgeous Arcadia Forest with my friends Jen and Andy. The park was huge and snowy and beautiful. When we stopped to take breaks, it was so silent that my ears rang a little.
Jeff had Sunday off and we took one of our mini-road trips where we just drive around and see what kind of trouble we can get into. We started the day at one of my favorite breakfast places, The Barn in Adamsville RI. I had one of their specials; eggs benedict over jalepeno cornbread (?!) It was incredible - savory, spicy, and sweet at the same time. I hope they make it part of their regular menu. Afterwards we drove to Marion, MA and happened upon an empty, open snowy field where a massacre of stuffed animals had taken place. Upon closer inspection we realized it was a dog park.
We drove further towards the Cape to Buzzards Bay where we took another little walk at Lyman Reserve, it was beautiful and I can't wait to go back and explore more of the trails.
Yesterday I made this soup.
With the following adjustments;
* I started from step 2, and threw in cubed soft tofu for a few minutes at the end (right before I added the egg mixture)
* veggie broth instead of chicken broth
* I used pasta orzo instead of rice
* I added sliced baby carrots

I think it came out really well! It was warm and comforting, but had a nice, bright flavor to perk up our sickly snowed-in selves.
I know I've been whining about being stir crazy but I am not sure I will get to do anything this Saturday after all, I feel the need to sleep and recuperate.
You kids all go out and have fun adventures for me! Report back.
Happy Friday!
