The Humboldt Squid, aka the Jumbo Flying Squid can grow over 5 feet long and weigh up to 100 pounds. Historically, they were thought to occur only as far north as Mexico. But in recent years, this species has been spotted as far north as Alaska, leaving scientists to speculate that global warming or a decrease in their natural predators and competitors (such as large tuna and billfish) may be the cause. One of the many amazing things about Humboldt Squid is that they have chromatophores embedded within their "skin." These chromatophores cause the Humboldt squid to flash brilliantly and may be form of communication.

Humboldt squid sometimes harass divers and fishermen, and all of their suckers on their tentacles are ringed with teeth which can cause painful bites. There is currently a commercial fishery for the species in European and Asian markets.
